Finding Design Ideas for Your Remodeling Project - Butler, NJ

One way to expand the living space of even the smallest of homes is to move the party outside. In order to do that, you will need to add a deck to your home. There are several choices in decking to use on that new deck.

Originally, every deck was made with wood. Wood offers strength, easy installation and a great feel to bare feet. Unfortunately, it has to be cleaned every year and can rot, warp or splinter. In order to keep a wood deck looking good, be sure that you clean and re-stain it every twenty four to thirty six months.

A longer lasting deck can be built using pressure treated materials. These materials have a life span of around fifteen years, are fairly inexpensive and common in use. Be sure to wear gloves and masks when working with these materials. Scraps should not be burned in order to keep from releasing chemicals that can make you sick.

In order to drive a nail, a pilot hole must be drilled each time. The darker woods also get very hot when exposed to direct sunlight. These decks have a lifetime of about twenty years.

Cedar and redwood naturally resist insects and rot. They make a deck with a twenty year lifespan, but are soft and easily damaged. They do not stand up well under constant snow pack with thawing and refreezing. The woods are light weight and easy to work with. When weathered they will turn a light gray. If this change in color is not wanted, you will need to treat the wood on a regular basis.

Wood fibers and plastic are combined to make composite decking. This material will not splinter and never has to be stained or painted. It must; however, be scrubbed on a regular basis to prevent mildew.

Some of the composite decking is sold as engineered decking. It has groves cut into the underside of the boards. This makes the materials lighter in weight, but still strong. Other engineered decking has groves in the sides that allow installation with hidden fasteners.

Plastic decking requires very little maintenance and is splinter free. This decking is made of PVC with hollow channels that cause it to be very stiff but light in weight. There are types of this decking that can be installed without wood decking underneath and types to be installed over existing decking. The material gives a low maintenance deck that is smooth. This material is very durable and the only maintenance is an occasional cleaning. There are some people that complain that the PVC materials do not have either the sound or feel of wood decking.

Polystyrene decking is both light and strong. It has a non-slip surface that becomes less slippery when wet. There are several color choices and the material looks like real wood.

No matter which material you choose, a deck will greatly expand the living space of your home. After you complete installation take time to enjoy spending time on the new deck.
